'Waterless Skincare'-that's their motto. So Simple Skincare is an innovative natural skincare brand from New Zealand that claims to have cosmeceutical grade active ingredients in their serums, moisturizers and face cleansers, all without water in any of their products. 70-90% of all skincare is water so its commendable that a brand is thinking out of the box and making skincare that is eco-friendly yet full of all the good stuff.
I was sent their Plump + Hydrate serum to try out for my dry skin this winters. It has Hyaluronic acid, caffeine and B3 Niacinamide as primary ingredients, along with Cornflower hydrosol water, Mamaku, Licorice, Blackberry and Blue Lotus Extracts.
I've used this serum consistently for over a month and half & as I'm almost running out of it now, so I think it's a good time to publish a balanced review. This was the only facial serum I took with me on my 4 week European holiday, which gave it a good chance to prove its worth.
I was asked to pick up a serum from their range based on my skin type and I chose this Plump + Hydrate serum for myself as that's exactly my skin needs, specially when on holiday. I applied sunscreen and makeup everyday for over 25 days on my holiday. That's the max number of makeup days I've done at a stretch. I used Savar Multi Boost Toner, this serum and Rosehip Oil as my night time skincare weapons and together these guys worked a charm. Even with the lack of sleep (we didn't sleep full 7 hours even once!) and all day out in the sun & heat, minimal amount of water & fresh foods in my diet, I came back home with skin as normal as before. For me, that proved its worth.
I notice my skin is bright and a lil tightened (plump?) in the mornings. It feels hydrated. From European summer to coming back to Auckland's cold, its been a near smooth transition.
The serum is very light and kinda milky in color. It spreads easily. It's smells floral and botanical. First few days, I found its scent a lil too strong (though pleasant) but now that I'm used to it, I don't mind it. The glass bottle is sturdy and travel friendly. The quantity of 30 ml means I could even carry it with me on the plane.
After cleansing my face, I spray on some hydrating toner and as it absorbs, I apply a dropper full of this serum all over (minus the eyes). It spreads easily. Even just the serum is enough for my dry skin but I do follow it with a few drops of Rosehip Oil. By itself, it hydrates my skin fully (must be that Hyaluronic acid goodness!). Some days, when I put on the serum, it stings a little around mouth and nose. The sensation dissipates in a minute or so. It's mostly on days I've had a tough skin day, with lots of makeup, sunscreen or dryness to deal with. The skin usually repairs itself overnight and there's no sting the next night.
So Simple recommends using it morning and night, however, I've only used it at night. I am too short on time in the mornings to bother with a full-on skincare routine.
So, that was my few cents on this serum. Do I recommend it? YES! if you have dry, dehydrated and dull skin, this serum will do wonders. It is also 100% natural and has safe cosmeceutical grade ingredients. The serum is made fresh in batches right here in Auckland so it's guaranteed to get to you fresh when you order it. At $43.90 NZD a bottle, it is expensive! Yes. And so are premium ranges from Estee Lauder or Elizabeth Arden. Aren't they dearer? I'm happy to support a local brand than big corporations so this serum will be my pick from the bunch.
I've almost run of this one and now I'm tossing if I should repurchase it or try another product from So Simple's skincare range. You can check out their full range on So Simple Skincare's website.
They offer worldwide shipping (free for orders over $60 NZD).
