Micellar Waters were so 2014. The whole micellar water industry has boomed since and now there's everything from micellar wipes to micellar gel cleansers. I wrote about my experience with micellar water makeup remover in early 2016.
Here's an excerpt from the same review regarding the nifty science behind micellar water.
"Micelle are clusters of surfactant molecules that are perfect for dissolving dirt and grime. These molecules have two ends-the hydrophilic one (water loving) and the hydrophobic one (water repelling/oil-loving). These molecules when dispersed in this cleansing water bind with the water and hence have the oil-loving end free to bind with any dirt or grime it comes across. Theoretically, there is no rinsing required after micellar water as it traps and dissolves all makeup, dirt & grime."
I've tried many micellar products since then. Today I'm gonna quickly show you another gem I've discovered. This is my second bottle of Neutrogena Deep Clean Micellar gel to foam 2-in-1 remover & deep cleanser! Wow! that was quite a mouthful. I use the dry skin version in it.
This cleanser is a pretty no nonsense product. It actually does it all- takes off makeup and doubles up as cleanser. Theoretically, it's a transparent gel which when rubbed on face dissolves makeup, dirt and grime and then as water is added, it turns into foam and all the residue is washed off.
In real life, I wish this gel was a little more runny. As I rub it onto my face to dissolve all makeup, it only stays for about 10-15 seconds on my face and then as I rub away, it absorbs in. At this point I add 2-3 drops of water to reactivate it and then it takes off all my makeup well. After this initial makeup removal step, I take a another tiny pea size amount of it, wet my hands and use it as a foamy cleanser to deep clean my face. And done!
This product is definitely travel friendly as it saves me from carrying a makeup remover. It doesn't itch my eye or irritate my skin. It dissolves most stubborn makeup in one go. The foaming cleanser is actually pretty potent so I do think it'll work for both dry and combo skin. I can definitely get away with just one cleanse on most days. Its the days when I do special occasion heavy duty makeup that I need the to double cleanse thoroughly with this Neutrogena cleanser. It gives a squeaky clean face. If you have overly dry skin, you will have to moisturize right after as its not hydrating. I treat it as a normal foaming cleanser and follow with my toner, Neutrogena Hydro Gel and Rosehip Oil.
Do I recommend this? Yes if you're looking for a 2-in-1 product that saves you time and space. The price point of $17.99 NZD is decent for a multitasking product. It comes in a very well packaged 142 ml pump packaging that is unbelievably mess free. I am on my second bottle of this cleanser and I still can't stop admiring its design.
The cleanser is available in all leading supermarkets in 2 variants. I have not tried the purple oily skin version on my face.
