Are you thinking about travelling the world? If so, then you’re in for a wild ride. You’re about to learn a lot about other cultures and how people view life. It’s going to rock your world.

Before you set off though, you need to conduct some “pre-flight checks” so to speak. In this guide, we discuss some of the essentials that anyone who is going to be away from home for more than two weeks needs to consider.

Print Copies Of All Your Documents

If you’re planning on being away from home for a long time, you will likely have a mountain of documents - especially if you want to travel the world. First and foremost, you’ll have visas and tickets. Next, you’ll have your accommodation reservations (unless you did it online) and perhaps itinerary.

It’s a good idea to make copies of each of these before you travel. You never know when you might lose them.

Store Your Valuable Away From Your Home

There are countless horror stories of people returning from travelling the world, only to find their homes stripped of all their valuables. Vacation burglaries are surprisingly common. All it takes is for somebody to discover that you’re away on holiday and your home becomes a target.

Your safest option, therefore, is to keep your valuables at a secure self storage facility. Hire a truck, pack it full of your precious possessions and then unload it into a unit monitored by CCTV. It’ll only take an afternoon, and once you’ve done it, you get peace of mind.

Pack Your Survival Kit

Most people who “travel the world” go outside of western countries. Your destination could be the heart of Africa, the Mongolian steppes, or the jungles of Borneo. Whatever the case, there will be times when you’ll be a long way from civilization and the services that you need. For that reason, you need a survival kit. Remember to pack your pain killers, prescription meds, headphones, hand sanitizer and earplugs. You might also want to take things like a torch, whistle and compass, depending on where you’re likely to find yourself.

Get Your Shots

Nobody likes getting their shots, but they’re essential if you’re travelling to some parts of the world. Immunizations protect you against the diseases that killed many of our forefathers who tried to settle in tropical regions. Those same diseases exist today, so you need to be careful.

Get Your International Driver’s License

If you’re just going on holiday for a week, you don’t need to bother with an international driver’s license. But if you’re going to be living abroad for months at a time, you want to have the option of hiring a car if you need it. International driving licenses give you the ability to drive in most countries and prove that you’ve passed your test in your home country.

Get Travel Insurance

Finally, travelling the world is a big financial undertaking. Be sure to get your travel insurance sorted before you leave so you can avoid big holes in your finances.
